10 Lies My Mom Told Me

Patti tagged me for the meme that's making it's way around the blogosphere...

Ten (10) Lies My Mother Told Me

1) Eat all your vegetables, it'll make your hair curly. (This one I never understood even as a lil one, because my hair was already curly, so I always asked what should I eat to make it straight.)

2) If you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all. (I knew this was a lie after I heard my parents curse the neighbors out, curse at the TV, yell at someone on the phone etc.)

3) If you lie, your tongue will turn black. (this one had me scarred for a while...I always checked my tongue in the mirror before I went to bed).

4) Don't play so rough, you'll poke somebody's eye out....(and to paraphrase George Carlin, have you ever poked anyone's eye out, nonetheless seen anyone with their eye poked out as a result of just "playing" ?)

5) If you swallow your gum, your insides will stick together.

6) Wait an hour after eating before you swim, or you'll get cramps and drown.

7) If you're not good, we'll have to send you to the "Bad Girls" Home. (This scarred me! )

8) If you waste paper, you won't go to heaven. (I have no idea where this came from, but I believed it so much so that even today I'll use both sides of the paper. My friends make fun of me when I do this while playing Pictionary!)

9) Wear a hat or you'll catch your death......

10) You're not going anywhere until you clean your plate. (I went, I saw, and I conquered!)

I'm taggin Oger the Caveman and Boondoggled.

Peace

My goodness! I guess those lies are UNIVERSAL! I was told each one of them myself except the 'paper' was 'salt' here. I am amazed at the almost 10/10 similarity!!!!

Thanks for your comment on my blog Odat.Yes I wanted to develop a character rather than to pick up the story line which was left for me at a very strange[ culture] junction. I have no idea whatsoever about the DAE witness progrm in the US as I am from India. So I chose to defer.:) I just hope it sits well with all as it did with you. Thanks!

I don't think my mom ever told me these things...maybe she never had to. I was a good kid.

Ah, The Parental Playbook. Mine always liked You're so *#&?$%^& Stoopid. They had the Pro Playbook. Ah, the good old days. Thank you.

Gosh, there's so many of these I'd forgotten about. Do you think there's a book parents buy so they learn all these before they have kids?

I don't know if it was a lie, and the jar warns against it, but my mother said to place Vicks Vapo Rub in your nostrils before bed if you had a bad cold. I did this and you know what? It worked perfectly! Maybe moms bend the truth a bit, but if they're right...

Great! Proof that mom's aren't ALWAYS right! Just pretty close ;-)

LOL! Oh yeah, number two was said quite frequently by my mother and usually five minutes later I'd hear her gossiping with one of my aunts.

She also used to tell me that God was following me around with a movie camera recording everything I did. And then, when I died, God was going to replay that movie for me and question me about my actions and then decide whether I went to heaven or hell. EEK! :)

I've heard the gum one before! I never listened, though. Sometimes I still swallow my gum.

How could I forget about #2, if you can't say anything nice about anyone...
Great job on this, Odat!

I like the one about wasting paper. Never heard it, but I try not to waste paper either...;-)
I've said no. 2 to myself many times; if you've watched the Disney movie 'Bambi', it's something that Thumper-the-rabbit's dad used to say to him... I liked the way the mother rabbit quoted it to Thumper...:-)
