"J" Word

(I bet you thought I forgot all about my "words" project. Ha, I haven't! After this one maybe I should)!

My "J" word is:

JABBERWOCKY: Meaningless speech or writing (something like what you find in this blog ;-); also a nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll.

I always liked this word, ever since I saw it for the first time. I guess that was while I was in school and was "forced" by those nuns to read the poem. But nonetheless the word just stuck out. I even named one of my cats Jabber. (he's no longer with us.)

JABBERWOCKY

The poem

The Jabberwock, as illustrated by John Tenniel

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!'
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
'And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

My intreperation:

At four o'clock, a slimey lizard drilled holes in the ground around a sundial (apparently Jabberwocks live in these holes). The birds with feathers like mops were miserable, and the lost green pigs were whistling and sneezing.
Look out for those very strange creatures - the desperate horney bird and the long necked biting thingy!
The man with the really big sword went looking for his fearsome enemy (I think this refers to the bad assed Jabberwock thing). He was tired and leaned against this weird tree to reflect.
Suddenly, the big bad Jabberwock (with red eyes!) came prancing along, murmering to itself.
The swordsman reached out quickly with his sword and chopped it's head off! He left in a triumphent mood carrying the head with him, smugly walking back to town.
And the townspeople rejoiced! and the birds and the pigs whistled and sneezed.
The end. ;-)

Peace

Literary interpretation is your true calling. The text is so much more approachable now. Thanks.

Damn, I'm such a redneck. I thought Jabberwocky had somethin to do with Star Wars.

And I like your interpretation about 34839483 times better!

Odat,
Stop what you are doing and become a language translator immediately. The pigs and birds whistled and sneezed -- that's brilliant!

I too always picture Chewbacca when I hear jabberwocky. Great post, please translate more for us!

Lee..
I know, it sounds like Jabba the Hut so I can understand that association.

I'll get right on tranlating more nonsensical pieces in the near future..thanks!!! lol
